New!  InVade Natural Clean For Organic and Natural Processing Facilities Is Now Available

The latest addition to Rockwell’s market-leading Bio Sanitation product range, InVade Natural Clean, is now available for foaming, mopping, spraying and drain applications. Like all InVade products, new InVade Natural Clean contains a powerful proprietary blend of natural microbes that digest the organic debris and build-up that causes problems in commercial food-processing accounts. The difference is that all ingredients in InVade Natural Clean are natural and are listed on the label. This simplifies the process for using this technology in National Organic Program accounts, and other accounts that require all natural products and full ingredient disclosure. One quart of the concentrate is diluted to one gallon with water to make a solution that produces thick, long-lasting foam. For mopping, the use rate is 1-2 oz per typical 4 gallon mop bucket. InVade Natural Clean is available in one gallon jugs from your Rockwell distributor. Visit www.rockwelllabs.com for further information, or contact your Rockwell sales representative.

Rockwell Labs Internship Program:  An On-Going Success Story

Rockwell Labs continued its successful internship program to encourage young women to pursue careers in science and engineering for the Spring semester of 2016. High school students Katie Prendergast, Taylor Messer, and Ashlyn Liska (L to R) completed the program through Northland CAPS (Center for Advanced Professional Studies) wherein they worked at Rockwell for 2 ½ hours each day during the Spring semester in lieu of normal class work. The students each spent time working in both the chemistry laboratory and the manufacturing area. Chemistry lab work included product QC and specification testing, formulation work and product development. In the manufacturing area, the company had recently purchased its most advanced piece of high-speed, automated manufacturing equipment to date, so the students assisted in the extensive testing and qualification to get the new machine up and running and producing product according to specifications. They also assisted in the ongoing implementation of the company’s 5S and advanced manufacturing initiatives. Katie and Taylor both graduated from high school this Spring at the top of their respective classes, and Ashlyn has one more year. All three students have paid internships at Rockwell over the summer. In addition, Sarah Piburn, who had participated in the CAPS program in the Spring of 2015, worked at Rockwell during the Christmas break this past year and is now back working again this summer after completing her first successful year of engineering school. Katie will be starting at Kansas State University in chemical engineering this fall. Taylor will be attending Creighton University in Nebraska to study biochemistry. Ashlyn enjoys chemistry lab work and is looking forward to completing another CAPS internship this coming year in a different area of chemistry. “I continue to be impressed by the many talents, and the drive and poise of these young women, stated Rockwell founder and CEO, Dr. Cisse Spragins. “Taylor is definitely the academic one with a strong interest in research, and is an accomplished flute player as well. Katie is outgoing and practical, and has also spent the last three years assisting in the broadcasting of various sporting events.” “And Ashlyn, well, she just gets it done,” Spragins laughed. “During her interview, she talked about a school project wherein she and four boys had been assigned to the project. The boys just weren’t getting anything accomplished, so she had to take charge and assign tasks to each of them and separate the ones who were “clingy” so they could be productive, in order to finish the project. I told her she would likely find throughout her career that she would often need to tell guys what to do in order to get things done!”

New and Improved InTice Gelanimo Ant Bait Station Design

Rockwell Labs is now shipping a redesign of its popular InTice Gelanimo Ant Bait station. The new design is even easier to use, increases the longevity of the rigid hydrogel bait, improves the versatility for placement purposes, and even further minimizes any potential for non-target contact with the bait. The unique, patent-pending, high-moisture, non-spill, rigid hydrogel formula in the station is unchanged. The only moist bait station on the market with no potential for spill, PMPs gain all the advantages of liquid bait with none of the mess. Ants can feed over the whole surface without drowning in the bait and more ants can feed at one time. The new bait station design features an easy-to-remove sticker that covers the access hole for the ants, allowing for quick, tool-less placement in the field. Low profile, at just under 1/2” high and 1 5/8” wide, the station can easily be placed under appliances and out of the way, or on narrow ledges such as window sills. The new design utilizes a foil top, stronger seal and a high-tech plastic construction to minimize moisture loss in storage and in the field. The new InTice Gelanimo Ant Bait station is available in a 30 pack box, and each station contains 0.25 oz of bait.  For more information visit www.rockwelllabs.com, contact your Rockwell sales rep, or visit your distributor today.

Rockwell Labs New Comprehensive Mosquito Management Technical Guide Now Available

Rockwell Labs Ltd offers a full line of mosquito management products for PMPs. While large scale mosquito control efforts are typically undertaken by government mosquito control districts, PMPs have the opportunity to provide relief for their customers and revenue to their bottom line through barrier treatments and breeding prevention around structures.

An effective mosquito management plan includes a range of tools and procedures. An IPM (Integrated Pest Management) approach is most effective and includes reduction of adult mosquitoes using adulticides, reduction of breeding sources and resting sites, prevention of egg laying and larval development using larvicides, and reducing the risk of human exposure through education and preventative measures. A mosquito control program should consider the target species, mosquito biology and behavior, and local and regional environmental conditions and regulations.

Rockwell Labs Provides Internships to Young Women Pursuing Non-Traditional Careers

It began in early 2014 when a teacher at North Kansas City High School contacted Dr. Cisse Spragins (Rockwell Founder and CEO) saying that he had a remarkable young woman who had an interest in “science and business” that he like her to meet.  The young woman, Yareli Hernandez, had a challenging upbringing, having lived at times with her mother, who moved frequently, and at times with her father who worked in the oil fields. She had not spent more than a year at any one school, until her last 2 1/2 years at North Kansas City High School. “I was really impressed by her confidence and composure, and she was obviously very bright. I spent a couple of hours showing her around and explaining what we did and she asked a ton of questions”, Spragins said. “I asked her if she would like a paid internship in our chemistry lab and she jumped at the opportunity.” She worked part time during the school year and full time over the summer, before leaving to study Neuroscience at Coe College in Iowa. “She did a great job at a wide variety of tasks in the lab, and for her final month I gave her her own product development project to work on, which was a real learning experience for her and she performed very well.”

In late 2014, Spragins learned about the Northland CAPS (Center for Advanced Professional Studies) program. The program works with area businesses to provide unpaid internships to high school students in several technical and business areas. “I told them I would like to work with young women interested in science, engineering and/or entrepreneurship,” Spragins said. Sarah Piburn worked at Rockwell during the Spring semester through the CAPS Advanced Manufacturing program. During that semester, she completed and updated process flow documents for various production lines, as well as a 5S mapping project as part of the company’s lean manufacturing initiative. Rockwell offered Sarah a full time paid internship for the summer and she is working in the chemistry lab researching methods and completing chemical and physical properties testing on numerous products. She will be studying chemical engineering at Missouri University of Science and Technology at Rolla in the fall.

In late Spring, Spragins met Katie Soden, daughter of Rockwell Controller Nancy Soden. Katie was finishing her second year at MU studying health sciences, and while she had always done very well in science and math, she wasn’t entirely sure what she wanted to do. “I offered her a paid internship in the chemistry lab, as I felt it would give her an understanding of the practical applications of science and help her develop more confidence and hopefully interest,” Spragins said. She is spending the summer performing quantitative analysis on Rockwell’s products, including method development for new products.

Laura Spatz, just finished her second year studying accounting and human resources at KU. She really wanted an internship in her field versus just a more typical “summer job”. “Nancy always has a number of projects in the works, plus we are in the midst of a lot of internal process development which she is helping with, so she’s getting good exposure to a number of different accounting and internal control projects,” Spragins said. “It’s wonderful having these bright, capable young women here. I’ve always felt that areas of study come alive when they can be applied in the practical world, and it’s also excellent preparation for one’s ultimate career. I’m glad we can provide that opportunity, and it helps us as well. There is much talk about under-representation of women in STEM areas, and particularly entrepreneurship in STEM areas. I’m a strong believer that role models can help build young women’s confidence to pursue these areas. It helps to see what is possible. Social change ultimately comes down to individuals acting one on one.”

John Brownlee Joins Rockwell Labs Ltd

Rockwell Labs is pleased to announce that effective Dec 1st, John Brownlee joined the company as its Technical Representative for the South Central territory, encompassing Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas and Louisiana. Brian Sundnas, who has covered the South Central territory for the last several years has taken over the North Central territory, which includes the states of Missouri, Kansas, Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, Nebraska, the Dakotas, and Colorado.

“It had been our plan for the last few years to make this transition once we found the right person, who would be located in the South Central territory. Brian lives in Kansas City, so the North Central territory makes more sense for him, versus boarding a plane every week as he’s been doing,” said Dr. Cisse Spragins, Rockwell’s CEO. “We were delighted when John became available, after his stint in Europe for the last few years. He’s got a great background in sales and technical support in the industry and a passion for the IPM solutions that Rockwell offers. Brian, of course, is no stranger to our customers in the North Central territory, since he covered that territory as well prior to mid-2011. We appreciate Wayne West’s professionally representing Rockwell in the North Central territory for the last two and a half years.”

“John has hit the ground running, and Brian has been very helpful in the transition for the last couple of months,” noted Rockwell’s VP of Sales and Marketing, Mike Tweedy. “I am confident that having someone as capable as John, who lives in Texas, will enable us to provide our customers in the South Central territory with an even greater level of service as we move forward.”

John may be reached at 615-838-3149 or jbrownlee@rockwelllabs.com. Brian may be reached at 816-210-7378 or bsundnas@rockwelllabs.com. Rockwell’s head office may be contacted at 816-283-3167, sales@rockwelllabs.com, or through www.rockwelllabs.com.

Rockwell Labs Ltd Introduces the First Bait Specifically to Fight Tawny Crazy Ants

InVict Blitz Ant Granules are a new tool now available to help PMP's battle the non-native tawny crazy ants, as well as other persistent ant species.
Referred to as Caribbean crazy ants in Florida or Rasberry crazy ants in Texas, it was thought these were two different ant species.  Recently, the Entomological Society of America (ESA) has determined they are the same ant species, and they are not Caribbean crazy ants, a similar species that has been in Florida for many years, but doesn’t have the destructive habits of the newer species.  The new species has been determined to be Nylanderia fulva  and ESA has given them the name tawny crazy ants .  Tawny crazy ants have been spreading throughout the Gulf Coast region of United States and throughout Florida, primarily through commerce transport over the past 15 years.  The ants are uniformly-sized 1/8 inch long and are reddish-brown in appearance. The colonies can number in the millions and have multiple queens.  The ants nest in nearly any object that retains moisture including stumps, soil, leaves, under rocks and other debris.  The worker ants are attracted to sweet parts of plants and can often be found near plants where aphids, scale insects, white flies and mealy bugs are present.  The nectar secreted from these insects attracts the worker ants.  They invade structures like homes, businesses, hospitals and more. Though they aren’t a public health threat, the massive numbers make them a significant nuisance and much of their damage is done by invading electronic equipment causing short circuits and power outages.  Tawny crazy ants are ecologically dominating and attack and displace other ant species, including red imported fire ants.
Recent research presented at the Southeast Pest Management Conference in May shows that unlike most other ant species, Tawny crazy ants show little seasonal food preferences.  They have a higher protein to carbohydrate preference in their food sources, throughout the year, which is an important factor in bait development.  InVict Blitz, the first bait specifically developed for these ants, features a proprietary bait matrix with a protein content higher than other baits, but balanced with carbohydrates to provide an optimal bait they will forage and feed to the colony.  InVict Blitz contains 0.5% imidacloprid, a highly effective and powerful non-repellent insecticide.  The combination of the custom bait matrix, a potent active, an effective use rate, and reasonable cost makes InVict Blitz a valuable residual tool in the management of these difficult ants.
InVict Blitz is labeled for use indoors, including food areas, and outdoors, including perimeter and turf applications, and numerous other sites.  The application rate is 4-8 oz per 1000 sq ft, and the bait can be re-applied as early as one week after application.  No personal protective equipment (PPE) is required.  InVict Blitz is currently available in TX, GA, LA, and FL and is sold in 1 lb shakers and 20 lb pails.

Dr. Jamel Sandidge Joins Rockwell Labs Ltd

Dr. Jamel Sandidge has joined Rockwell Labs Ltd as a research entomologist.  A native of Virginia, Dr. Sandidge received his B.S. degree in Cellular and Molecular Biology from Virginia Tech.  He then went on to the University of Kansas (KU) and received his M.A. in Entomology and his Ph.D. in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology (2005).  His Ph.D. dissertation focused on the distribution, population ecology, and genetics of brown recluse spiders in urban habitats.  A leading expert in brown recluse spiders, Dr. Sandidge has consulted on the subject since 2001, lecturing widely and being interviewed extensively in the popular press.  He authored the book “Brown Recluse Spiders: A Knowledge Based Guide to Control and Elimination” in 2009.  In addition to his consulting practice, Dr. Sandidge operated a general pest control business in the Kansas City area from 2004 to 2009.  He sold the business in 2009 and returned to academia, working as a lecture professor and laboratory manager at KU.  “I’m delighted Jamel has come on board,” said Dr. Cisse Spragins, Rockwell’s CEO.  “I’m confident that we’ll provide him the mix of intellectual challenge and practical applications that he seeks, while greatly benefiting our product development process.” “Jamel is creative at many levels,” Spragins noted.  “An entertaining example is the “Biorap” he wrote and performed to help his students remember the geologic time scale, which belies his normally quiet and studious demeanor.”  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AgLbRIPmeiM.  Dr. Sandidge’s primary role in the company will be R&D, however he will also be available to speak at conferences from time to time and is currently scheduled to speak at the Kentucky Short Course this fall.

CimeXa Insecticide Dust is Now Registered in California

PMPs in California will now be able to experience the exceptional efficacy of CimeXa against bed bugs, spiders, fleas, ticks, lice, roaches, ants, firebrats, silverfish, and mites that PMPs around the country have enjoyed since January 2012.  Also, of particular importance to California PMPs, CimeXa is highly effective for the prevention and treatment of drywood termites.

CimeXa is comprised of 100% engineered amorphous silica and is odorless, non-staining, non-repellent, and lasts up to ten years when undisturbed.  The exceptional absorption of water (in liquid form, but not humidity) and oil, destroys the waxy cuticle, causing rapid dehydration and death.  With its mode of action, resistance to CimeXa is extremely unlikely.  While as much or more potent than many synthetic chemicals, amorphous silica has an excellent, extremely low toxicity profile and is even allowed as a food additive.  CimeXa is not subject to California Prop 65 regulations.  Compared to diatomaceous earth, CimeXa has much greater potency so control results will be at least three times faster. CimeXa is also much more consistent in quality and is guaranteed to have virtually zero crystalline content.

The broad label allows the product to be used to treat cracks, crevices, voids, mattresses, carpets, pet rest areas, attics and many other areas.  Unlike most products, CimeXa can be applied as a dust, perfect for voids or gallery injection, or can be mixed with water and applied as a spray, which leaves a fine coating of the dust adhered to surfaces without introducing large amounts of dust into the air.

With an unmatched combination of potency, residual activity, value and very low environmental impact, CimeXa is an indispensable tool for PMPs nationwide.  The product is available in quart size bottles which hold 4 oz of the extremely light dust and 5 gallon buckets that hold 5 lbs.  The standard usage rate is 2 oz per 100 square feet.
