Using Stations for Baiting, Monitoring and Trapping Insects

Controlling pests requires a diverse treatment plan with different products and control methods. One helpful tool to consider adding to your pest management program is a station. Stations are versatile and can aid in controlling a variety of pests. Several stations are on the market, and they serve different purposes, working in different ways. Rockwell Labs offers three stations, the D-Sect IPM station, the BaitPlate station, and the InTice Border Patrol System station that can help you to bait, monitor, and trap insects.

How Stations Work

There are a variety of stations available that provide pest management professionals flexibility for use in their service programs. Stations can be designed to target specific pests or can be used to control a broad spectrum of pests. These stations can aid in trapping and baiting insects as well as helping with the monitoring of pest activity.

  • Monitoring Insects: Stations are an effective means of monitoring insect activity and identifying an insect problem. Early detection of pest activity can allow for control measures to be put into place to help stop infestations before they can grow and spread.
  • Trapping Insects: Stations are also used for trapping and killing insects. Some stations are mechanical traps with physical barriers designed to contain pests. Other stations can contain glueboards that catch and immobilize insects, leading to their death.
  • Baiting Insects: Stations can also be designed for baiting target insects such as ants and cockroaches. Tamper-resistant stations are designed to allow targeted pests easy access to the bait inside in a professional, contained, and secured device.

Advantages of Using Stations

Incorporating stations into your pest management program can provide you with several advantages.

  • Stations Protect the Bait & Glueboard: The stations help to protect the bait and glueboard from moisture, dust, dirt, and other debris that can adversely impact their performance and longevity. Stations can also prevent glueboards from being damaged.
  • Stations Reduce Exposure to Children & Pets: When servicing residential accounts, stations can provide peace of mind to your customers. Stations keep the bait and glueboard contained, helping to reduce the possibility of accidental exposure to children and pets.
  • Stations Are Easy to Use: Stations are designed for ease of use and quick set up. After adding the glueboard or bait to the station, you can easily place or mount the station in the desired location. Once it is in place, the station is ready to go. Monitoring the station and replacing the bait and glueboard is also easy to do. Stations make bait removal or relocation much easier for the technician.
  • Stations Project a Professional Service: Stations can also help to project a more professional service to your customers. Bait can be contained in stations rather than randomly placed throughout the structure. Rockwell’s D-Sect IPM station is available in professional white and a convenient clear to suit the needs of your customer.

Stations Available from Rockwell Labs

Whether you are looking for a station to bait insects or to monitor and trap insects, Rockwell Labs has you covered. Rockwell offers two stations designed to make controlling pests easier that can be used for a variety of applications.

D-Sect IPM Station

Rockwell’s D-Sect IPM station is a patented, discreet, low-profile, and durable station that can be used for baiting, monitoring, trapping, and killing insects. It can be used in residential, commercial, and industrial accounts indoors and in protected areas outdoors. Its tamper-resistant design allows pests to easily access the station while keeping children and pets out. The station is designed to be mounted in any orientation with multiple securing options. They also come with service labels that can be placed on the inside or outside of the station.

  • Baiting Insects: The D-Sect stations are effective for baiting ants, cockroaches, crickets, silverfish, and other insects. Liquid, gel, and granular baits can be used in the stations. The D-Sect baiting insert trays are ideal when needing to use multiple baits at the same time. The bait can easily be replaced without having to open the station by using the two knockout holes on the top of the station. Place the stations about a finger’s width from walls or other objects to allow insects to access the station from all sides.

Monitoring & Trapping Insects: The D-Sect stations are also great for monitoring and trapping insects by using the D-Sect custom glueboards. The stations protect the glueboards from being crushed and prevent them from getting dusty. They can be placed in areas where pests are likely to be active. For crawling insects, place baits along walls and in corners. For flying insects, you can place the stations in higher locations. While the glueboards can be used on their own to trap or monitor insect activity, you can also use them with one of Rockwell’s InVite lures to attract pantry pests, small flies, large flies, and cockroaches to the station.

BaitPlate Station

The BaitPlate station is a smaller, economical, sturdy station designed for baiting ants, cockroaches, and other insects. The low-profile, clear station is versatile, holding gel, granular, and liquid baits. The dual bait compartments allow multiple baits to be used in one station. The halves of the station easily snap together, securing the bait and protecting it from the elements. Pests can easily access the bait via the ramped entry, and the adjustable tab on the lid allows both small and large insects to enter the station. The included sticky dots make it easy to mount to surfaces. The BaitPlate stations work well with Rockwell’s InVict Advanced Baits and InTice Borate Baits and can fit inside the D-Sect station.

  • Baiting Ants & German Cockroaches: To bait ants and German cockroaches, you will want to make sure the little tab on the top of the station is snapped down into the hole. Add the bait to the station and place it in areas with ant and cockroach activity. Ants and cockroaches prefer areas with sources of food and moisture. You can also place the station along structural edges or outside close to where pests are seen entering the structure.
  • Baiting American Cockroaches & Large Insects: When baiting larger insects, open the tab or remove it by tearing it off at the perforation. Place the station in areas where insects or their signs are seen including in basements, attics, and crawlspaces. You can also place the station in closets and under or behind appliances, cabinets, and sinks.

InTice Border Patrol System Station

The InTice Border Patrol station is a durable, plastic above ground outdoor station that is perfect for setting up and servicing a proactive, reusable perimeter defense for ants. The small green station integrates seamlessly with the InTice Gelanimo Ant Bait in the 4 oz cups. Simply drop the cup into the station and put the keyless, snap-on lid on the station for easy service and bait protection. The station keeps the InTice Gelanimo bait with the patented “rigid hydro-gel” technology fresher, longer. The rigid-hydro-gel bait has all the advantages of a liquid bait, plus more, with none of the disadvantages. The high moisture content of the bait has a consistency similar to gelatin, and remains stable up to 130°F. The highly effective rigid gel bait allows multiple ants to feed at once without drowning in the bait, and they can easily cut and carry pieces of Gelanimo back to the nest site. The Border Patrol station has four downward facing openings under the lid, providing easy access for crawling pests while keeping out moisture. It also has a simple anchor spike for quick deployment. The Border Patrol station can also be used for granular bait such as InTice 10 Perimeter Bait for controlling a wide range of crawling insects, or liquid bait such as InTice Thiquid Ant Bait.

Simply place the Border Patrol stations ideally in shaded areas near pest harborages. In general, it is better to put the stations where pests are likely to congregate instead of just placing them uniformly around the perimeter. Pay particular attention to areas that are damp or where vegetation is heavy.  Depending upon the species of ant and the level of infestation, spacing could range from 10 feet to 40 feet or more. For a general preventative situation during the warm season, two stations per typical home, placed near likely pest harborages should work well. The included service labels or your own proprietary label can be placed on the underside of the station lid.

Stations provide many advantages and can be used for a variety of pest problems. From baiting to monitoring and trapping, stations allow you to meet the changing needs of your customer’s service program. Rockwell’s stations are versatile and easy to use, making them great additions to your pest management program.
