When an insecticide with repellent properties is applied to the perimeter of a structure, a repellent barrier is created. This repellent barrier will drive insects away from treated areas, helping to prevent infestations before they start. Did you know that not all insecticide repellent properties are the same? There are actually two different types of repellency that an insecticide treatment provides depending on the type of product used: true repellency and excito-repellency. Each affect pests differently, resulting in different forms of protection. Understanding these differences will help you to choose the right product for the pest situation your customer is facing.
The first type of repellency is referred to as excito-repellency. Excito-repellents affect pests when they come in contact with the product. The excito-repellents have an irritating effect on insects, causing erratic behaviors and potential repellency. Synthetic pyrethroid insecticides often provide excito-repellency. To be effective, a thorough application is needed to ensure pests come in contact with the product.
The second type of repellency is referred to as true repellency. Botanical insecticides, like our line of EcoVia products, provide true repellency protection against pests. Not only do they deliver quick kill control when applied, they also create an environment crawling and flying insects want to avoid. Many botanical oil components act in the vapor phase. When insects come in the vicinity of the product application, they are repelled by the vapors. This repellency covers areas larger than where the product is applied, making them more forgiving than excito-repellent products. They won’t require as thorough of an application to be effective.
Botanical insecticides can be used to create an effective insect barrier and provide a greener solution for your customers. Starting with a spray treatment to the foundation and following up with a granule or dust application is ideal. This two-pronged approach will provide longer-lasting protection against pests.

To create a repellent barrier, start by applying a botanical insecticide to the foundation of the structure. Our EcoVia EC emulsifiable concentrate provides control against a broad spectrum of crawling and flying insect pests. It is a FIFRA 25(b) product, making it great for customers looking for a greener service option. Spray the foundation up to 3′ above grade using a hand pressurized compressed air sprayer, backpack sprayer or mist blower, or power sprayer. Apply at a rate of 1 gallon per 1000 sq ft. Mixing rates will change depending on the length of service intervals, but the mid-rate for mixing is 2 ounces per gallon.
To extend the residual protection of the EcoVia EC treatment, you can apply a botanical granule or wettable dust around and to the structure’s perimeter.

Our EcoVia G granular insecticide offers protection against a variety of crawling and flying insects. The gradual release of botanical vapors will help to extend the residual protection. For a perimeter barrier treatment, apply granules in a band around the foundation of the structure at a rate of 1 to 2 pounds per 1000 sq ft. Granules can be applied to landscaping, under bushes and shrubs, under overhanging decks, and other areas close to the structure.

Our EcoVia WD wettable dust is a highly effective and versatile insecticide that can be applied as a dust or wettable powder. Apply EcoVia WD as a spray to structure foundations, around windows and doors, utility openings, vents, eaves, behind shutters, and other areas where pests can enter the structure. You can also apply the product to a band of soil and vegetation 6 to 10 feet wide around the building. Treat cracks and crevices in and around the foundation with the dust as well.
Botanical insecticides are an effective and greener solution for mosquito and tick control. A spray treatment supplemented with a granular and a wettable dust insecticide can provide long-lasting protection. Our EcoVia MT mosquito & tick control, EcoVia G granular insecticide, and EcoVia WD wettable dust are go-to products for a 3-step mosquito and tick control program.

EcoVia MT is a specially formulated botanical concentrate for mosquitoes and ticks, providing fast knockdown and residual control. Its concentrated formula provides low use rates and cost savings per application. It is labeled for use outdoors and in unfinished areas indoors. For mosquito control, spray areas where mosquitoes rest, harbor, and breed including shrubbery, heavy vegetation, under porches and decks, and other shaded, damp areas. Apply deep into vegetation. You’ll also want to treat low areas where water tends to pool. For tick control, apply as a coarse spray to grassy areas and under plants, bushes, shrubs, trees, and other shaded, damp areas. To prevent tick migration, apply a barrier treatment between adjacent wooded areas and the lawn.

EcoVia G provides long-lasting mosquito and tick repellency as well as mosquito larval kill. It is the perfect complement to spray applications to extend the residual protection. For mosquito and tick control, apply granules to turf, landscaped areas with heavy growth, ground cover vegetation, wooded areas, under porches and decks, and in other shaded, damp areas. You should also treat the boundary between wooded and turf areas as well as low areas where water may pool. Apply at a rate of 1 to 2 pounds per 1000 sq ft.

EcoVia WD kills and repels adult mosquitoes and ticks. Its versatile formulation can be applied as a wettable powder or dust. It works well as a supplement to spray treatments to help extend the residual control. For mosquito control, apply to shaded, damp areas where mosquitoes are likely to harbor, rest, and breed. For tick control, apply as a coarse spray to brush, branches, rock walls, areas with tall grass and other vegetation, and habitats where ticks may harbor.
Creating an insect repellent barrier is an effective control method for a variety of crawling and flying pests. Choosing a product that provides true repellency and contact kill will help to prevent pest problems from occurring. A spray treatment complemented by a granule or dust application will help to extend the barrier’s residual control, providing your customers with longer-lasting protection against pests.
